Effective Hosting Cost Calculator

The lowest advertised electricity rate is not always the lowest effective hosting cost. Billing model and uptime both affect what you actually pay per hashing hour. Compare two scenarios side-by-side.

What this models: Monthly electricity / hosting energy cost only. Does not include setup fees, management fees, repair costs, shipping, or other fixed charges. Results are modeled estimates — not a precise invoice. Actual hosting contracts vary.

About billing models

Actual operating hours billing

Energy cost tracks actual hashing time. When miners are down, the modeled monthly cost falls proportionally. Relevant for providers like Simple Mining that describe precision / actual-consumption billing.

Fixed / prepaid power basis billing

Customer's modeled monthly power charge does not automatically fall when miners are down — the full month is billed at the contracted rate. Relevant for providers like Compass Mining that use a flat monthly fee structure. Lower uptime raises the effective cost per hashing hour.

Formulas used:

operating_hours = 720 × (uptime% ÷ 100)

Actual: monthly_cost = (watts ÷ 1000) × ($/kWh) × operating_hours

Fixed: monthly_cost = (watts ÷ 1000) × ($/kWh) × 720

effective_cost_per_op_hour = monthly_cost ÷ operating_hours

This comparison models electricity / energy cost only. Billing model matters: with fixed/prepaid billing, monthly cost stays constant even when miners are down, raising the effective cost per operating hour.

Actual hosting contracts vary. Review your provider's billing terms to determine exactly how downtime affects charges. These outputs are illustrative estimates — not a precise invoice.
